Summertime" is an aria composed in 1934 by George Gershwin for the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess. The song soon became a popular and much recorded jazz standard, described as "without doubt. one of the finest songs the composer ever wrote.

George Gershwin’s Summertime. 1. Janis Joplin (1969). This is perhaps one of the most unlikely versions of the Gershwin classic, but it somehow musically works. The combination of Joplin’s desperate, heartfelt vocals accompanied by an earnest blues outfit (Big Brother and Holding Company) does do justice to the original sentiments of the song. This track was part of a fairly recent album release in 2016 titled, Summertime: Willie Nelson Sings Gershwin. 5. André Previn (1964). A more up to date interpretation of this Gershwin standard. Sublime the band was what came to be a fusion between Ska and Punk and ushered in the third wave of Ska music. In this track, the band take all manner of diversions from Gershwin’s original. Astounding A Cappella Version Of Vivaldi’s Spring.

Written in 1934, ‘Summertime’ was one of the first compositions George Gershwin worked on for his brand-new opera Porgy and Bess. The jazz-inspired song is a lullaby for Clara to sing to her child, and it is reprised several more times throughout the opera. The versatile hit went on to be covered by thousands of artists, in every genre from disco to reggae. Being one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz, Miles Davis’s instrumental version of ‘Summertime’ on his 1958 album, Porgy and Bess, is one of the best known. Recorded over just four days in the summer of 1958, Porgy and Bess is still considered as an historic jazz masterpiece. With her bluesy vocal style, ‘Summertime’ was a natural choice for Janis Joplin and her band, Big Brother and the Holding Company. The album in which the track featured, Cheap Thrills, was one of the most successful albums of the 1968.

George Gershwin’s idea to write Porgy and Bess can be traced to 1926 when he first read the novel Porgy by DuBose Heyward, which was set on the fictitious Catfish Row in the Deep South. After signing a deal with the author, Gershwin began composing in 1934 and Heyward wrote the words to ‘Summertime’. The song appears more than once in the opera. Its first appearance is as a lullaby, sung by Clara, at the beginning of Act I and later it is sung by Bess. The first recording of the song from 1935 features Gershwin himself on the piano and Abbie Mitchell, who played Clara, singing.
