Present is the ninth studio album by British progressive rock band Van der Graaf Generator, released in 2005. It was the band's first studio album since The Quiet Zone/The Pleasure Dome in 1977, and the first with the 'classic' line-up since World Record in 1976. The Charisma Records label was reactivated for its release, as well as a reissue series of Van der Graaf Generator's back catalog and Peter Hammill's solo releases from 1972-86.

Out of interest, on this album Hugh Banton plays a two keyboard and pedals setup that behaves exactly as though it were an organ. The keyboards are a Roland VR760 and a Roland VK7, both of which have 'virtual Hammond' generators and organ drawbar control. From The Sunday Observer Music Monthly, April 24th 2005: Prog Chorus VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR Present (EMI) £1. 9 Paul Morley on the savage return of a misunderstood Seventies cult band "Van Der Graf Generator haven't recorded together for 27 years, but their new album sounds like it was recorded when they were young and wild. This is probably because when they were young and wild, they sounded like they were ancient, nihilistic and mystical, and on the verge of a long drawn out death.

Only for completionists (1%). Present is the 9th full-length studio album by UK progressive rock act Van Der Graaf Generator. Itīs the first studio album release by the band since The Quiet Zone, The Pleasure Dome (1977), so Present falls under the comeback album catagory. Present is a 2 disc release.

Van der Graaf Generator returned with "Present", this 2005 album, that comes after the final studio album in 1977. It was a long hiatus and one may have been forgiven for assuming that the band would have become stale or lost their prog roots and ultimate weirdness, of course great bands like this will always provide something very special. Abandon Ship!' is a lot of fun and has the same type of thematic content as 'A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers'. It has a scratchy raw guitar riff and this is joined by sax and organ blasts over the odd meter of drumming. The lyrics are the kind that can only be found on a VDGG album. Who the heck would use the words "Oh, the heptagenarians got behind the decks, while the skeleton crew went through the motions, it was only the medication that was keeping them erect, Yeah, the devil got the best tunes so god knows what comes next.

Re-forming no less than 27 years after the band last broke up, Van Der Graaf Generator were never going to put together the usual kind of reunion record. For a start, the reunion itself is largely in the eye of the beholder - various permutations of the band have played together on a number of occasions over the past three decades, which means that it's their own understanding of what the Van Der Graaf Generator name signifies that dominates this album, rather than any of the motives and moods that normally.

Hmmm! First off, how to actually review this? The CD versions have the 1st six tracks on one CD (sub 40mins so old -school album length). The other 10 add up to a more substantial listen, but is it the finished article, VdGG love their jam improv after all? Ok, so taking this as a single album with a decent-sized lump of extras, what are we into? Well for my ears and tastes the 'album' channels the spirit of Pawn Hearts on the 1st couple of tracks, then things go really off the boil with three directionless and slightly unpleasant (clipped / distorted / cramped) sounding central tracks. Track 6 revives sagging interest with a sweet, quiet (relatively!) ballad. Tracks 7 to 16 are interesting and are instrumentals. Some better ideas lie unpolished here than in the 'album' part. 'Very patchy' is the overall summation.
