November 6, 1920 – March 12, 1991). Rossi Lemeni was born in Istanbul, Turkey, the son of an Italian colonel and a Russian mother. In his prime he was one of the most respected bassos in Italy. The composer Ildebrando Pizzetti wrote the opera Assassinio nella cattedrale (1958) specifically for Rossi-Lemeni. He was also a prize-winning poet and a painter. The basso made his debut as Varlaam in Boris Godunov, at Venice, in 1946. Highlights: Prologue, Scene I: In the Courtyard of the Novodevichy Monastery Near Moscow. Prologue, Scene I: Chorus of Wandering Pilgrims.

Mussorgsky: Boris Godunov (selected scenes); Wagner: Parsifal - Symphonic Synthesis; Good Friday Spell: Rossi-Lemeni/ San Francisco SO/ Stokowski. In December 1952, Leopold Stokowski conducted a series of concert performances of highlights from Boris Godunov in the Rimsky-Korsakov version, and promptly recorded for RCA the same brilliantly chosen group of favourite passages. The result is spectacular, as Cala's superb CD transfer demonstrates. Both the chorus and orchestra are incandescent, and the Russian-Italian bass, Nicola Rossi-Lemeni, singing with a firmness of focus that later deserted him, is wonderfully characterful throughout. Well coupled with selections from act three of Parsifal, another opera dear to Stokowski.
