This album was Jimi's coming out party. The Jimi Hendrix Experience had been tearing up England and Europe and were. The film entitled "Jimi Plays Monterey" was accompanied by the release of the sound track album "Jimi Plays Monterey Original Motion Picture Sound Track". Yeah, the air-brushed cover was pathetic and the thought of yet more Hendrix archival material certainly didn't excite me. But here's the strange thing.

As for The Jimi Hendrix Experience, they were virtually unknown in The States at that time. Like many of the artists that appeared at that festival that would not remain the case – in slightly less than 45 minutes, The Monterey International Pop Festival made their reputation. You will note that Monterey was not billed as a Rock Festival. It was very much a pop festival and the range of artists from Ravi Shankar to Otis Redding to Hugh Masekela to Jefferson Airplane to The Byrds to Lou Rawls to Simon & Garfunkel to Johnny Rivers is quite staggering. Organised by John Phillips of The Mamas.

Jimi Hendrix's show at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival was the performance that broke him in the United States. Jimi and the Experience were in fine, lean, fiery form on this nine-song set, which showcased the most well-known tunes from the Are You Experienced? album and covers of "Killing Floor," "Like a Rolling Stone," "Rock Me Baby," and "Wild Thing.

Jimi Plays Monterey is a posthumous live album by Jimi Hendrix released in February 1986. The album documents The Jimi Hendrix Experience's performance at the Monterey Pop Festival on June 18, 1967. As well as songs from the band's debut album Are You Experienced, Monterey also includes covers of "Killing Floor" (Howlin' Wolf), "Like a Rolling Stone" (Bob Dylan), "Rock Me Baby" (B. B. King) and "Wild Thing" (Chip Taylor).
