Radio No Youni (Comme A La Radio) 11. Kutsu Asa-Chang & Junray is about the friction between self-taught tabla-bongo guru Asa-Chang (who spends his professional life as a touring percussionist with g J-pop acts), and traditionally instructed tabla master U-Zhaan. Includes unlimited streaming via the free Bandcamp app, plus high-quality download in MP3, FLAC and more. Purchasable with gift card.

Asa-Chang & Junray have been performing since 1998, and Jun Ray Song Chang is their first release outside of Japan. It's a compilation of their first two Japanese releases, and is fortunately interesting on more than just technical grounds. The sounds here are unexpectedly diverse (with a band featuring only two percussionists and a programmer, that's a major feat), especially given that each song appears to have been an exercise in making due with only the barest necessities.

Producer – Asa-Chang. Recorded By, Mixed By, Effects – Kiyoshi Kusaka. Tabla, Congas, Trumpet, Voice – Asa-Chang. I admit, "Hana," the first track on Asa-Chang & Junray's album JUN RAY SONG CHANG, blows me away. Against a backdrop of cinematic strings comes a Japanese spoken word piece, both male and female, regular and distorted, perfectly accompanied with a tabla. As the voices speed up, so do the strings. The rest of the album doesn't quite live up to the promise in "Hana," though, though the circus-on-acid "Preach" and the freaky festival of "Goo-Gung-Gung.

Jun Ray Song Chang is the third studio album by experimental band Asa-Chang & Junray, released through The Leaf Label on September 17, 2002. Asa-Chang - string arrangements, bongos, producing, trumpets, vocals. Shoukichi Kina - composing. Kiyoshi Kusaka - engineering, mixing, programming. Kazufumi Kodama - percussion, programming. Yoshimi P We - programming.

Then along come Asa-Chang and Junray. This music is like a journey to an unknown country; someone's put you to sleep and bundled you onto a plane, you've only just woken up as the plane hits the runway; you wander out of the airport trying to work out where you are by your surroundings: Java? Osaka? Nepal? More likely in the case of Asa-Chang and Junray, you're in one of Italo Calvino's Hidden Cities or you're even perhaps on a whistle-stop tour of a number of them. Some snapshot highlights: "Hana".

Am i the only one who finds those effected voices (quite) unbearable?I've had this album for years now and always wanted to like it.So i've been coming back to it from time to time. To give it another chance. But every single time i put it on the player i just can't get over those effected voices and enjoy the music. They probably fit the spirit of the album, but still…This time i'm gonna definitively give up and put it on sell. Sad story.

Beautifully bizarre. The rest of the album doesn't quite live up to the promise in "Hana," though, though the circus-on-acid "Preach" and the freaky festival of "Goo-Gung-Gung." Much of the album seems to be examining the textures of the Japanese language itself, stretching it and cutting it up, with some tracks more successful than others. "Kobana" simply seems to be a restatement of "Hana," with a harmonica instead of strings, but "Jippun" speeds us through a swirling landscape, with bits of shakuhachi floating on the surface, finally puncturing the surface with a scat-like vocal. "Kokoni Sachiari" is all organized clutter, with heavy metal feedback and folksy plucking all in the same track. What a way to take Japan into the future!
