While the rest of the album is fine, ultimately nothing quite matches the brilliance of those opening 15 minutes. Alternating proficient GORDON GILTRAP styled instrumentals with heartfelt songs, the best is probably the title cut which establishes Slevin's brilliant picking on acoustic guitar while culminating in a quasi acidic romp. The closer "Gentleman Jim's" is a Celtic jazz funk number very much in the vein of MOVING HEARTS, whose influence on Irish folk and rock far exceeded their modest output, and who had stormed out of the gate a year or two prior
Freeflight received wide critical acclaim at the time, being described as 'one of the most essential of Irish rock albums' in Mark J. Prendergast's book, 'Irish Rock, Roots, Personalities. It is considered to be Jimi's best work to date
Jimi Slevin launched a fully solo career in 1980, and in 1983 released his critically acclaimed album Freeflight (since re-released on CD), followed by Home To The Heart in 2001. He is currently based in Germany where he has his own record label and recording studio. Brian Despard spent the early ’80s with Dublin new wave band Toy With Rhythm, while Jimmy Gibson spent that decade playing with popular jazz group Hotfoot. Getting There captures a point of transition in Slevin’s musical evolution. It blends elements of his prog rock past with a direct hard rock that was more fashionable in 1977, and even has hints of his future ed work. Tracks like Eternal Crown bear the influence of Thin Lizzy, while a heavy version of Hold On Pretty Woman is an affectionate tribute to Skid Row and Brush Shiels.
Guitarist Jimi Slevin, an inheritor of the sixties guitar-based style, continued to play vigorously up and down the country without a care in the world. Definitely forming a vital bridge during the lean mid-seventies, Slevin became a number one live attraction and the most popular home-based guitarist. After breaking formidable ground with the classical rock oriented Peggy's Leg, he was enrolled in Skid Row for a brief phase before forming his own Jimi Slevin Band in 1975, the hottest band in the country at the time. Slevin changed the name of his group to Firefly and cut the record "Getting There" for EMI in 1978. A mixed album of guitar music, the tracks 'Magic Lands' and 'Wouldn't It Be Nice' are prominent displays of Slevin playing at his inspired best. Deciding to level off and work on his own, Slevin spent many years conceiving his first solo project which was finally released in 1982.

Freeflight is a live album by American jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal featuring performances recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1971 for the Impulse! label. Additional performances from this concert were released as Outertimeinnerspace in 1972. It was also the first album to have Jamal play electric piano. The Rhodes Piano was given to him by somebody living in Switzerland, and Jamal said he would continue to play the instrument in the future as well as his standard acoustic piano.
