Perhaps more than other releases in Gergiev 's cycle, this volume invites the listener to explore Shostakovich 's processes in the context of his time and side-by-side comparisons of these symphonies will highlight many features of Shostakovich 's symphonic methods.

Valery Gergiev continues his acclaimed Shostakovich symphony cycle with his sixth release, a two SACD set featuring Symphonies No., 5 & 6. Shostakovich's symphonies are often emotionally powerful and the three symphonies performed here are a particularly compelling and riveting combination. Without doubt, the tortuous difficulty of adhering to vaguely articulated political dictates shaped the evolution of Shostakovich's music.
Valery Gergiev’s recordings of Shostakovich’s Sixth through Ninth symphonies were released on Philips, but this disc of the First and Fifteenth symphonies has been issued on the Mariinsky label, which is run by the St. Petersburg theater from which the label takes its name. The performances are disappointing, but not from a technical point of view; Gergiev is one of the finest living Russian conductors, and the Mariinsky Orchestra is one of the best Russian orchestras whose playing here is never less than superb. Performance (Nos 4 & 6) (No. 5) Recording ‘Gergiev’s relatively manic pace in these latter movements creates a suitably febrile atmosphere. After spending so much time listening to Shostakovich: Symphonies Nos 4, 5 & 6, I’m still in awe of the Mariinsky Orchestra’s knack to not only perform this music immaculately but also get out of its way and let the human conditions shine forth. We cannot allow ourselves to take recordings like this for granted.

Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra bring an intensity to great swaths of this trilogy from the 1930s, writes Andrew Clements. Though they are rarely yoked together on disc, the three symphonies that Shostakovich composed in the 1930s do make a provocative trilogy .
