Tubby Hayes Quartet, For Members Only: Live ‘67 (Miles Music) 1990 Tubby and his group live in London recorded for broadcast shortly before the Mexican Green sessions. This band is firing on all cylinders no matter whether they’re playing storming hard bop originals like Dear Johnny B., killer ballads like Gordon Jenkins’ This Is All I Ask, or exploring more open material like Hayes’ Mexican Green. Tubbs’ tone on tenor is all peaty malt on the slow material and pure fire on the uptempo numbers. I’ve always loved this Tubby Hayes recording from 1968, ‘Mexico Green’. Hayes was an immensely significant British saxophonist who died way too young (in 1973 age 38). He is best known for his hard bop tenor saxophone style, of which he was a master, and there’s plenty of that on this album, which is comprised entirely of Hayes’ originals.

Edward Brian "Tubby" Hayes (30 January 1935 – 8 June 1973) was an English jazz t, best known for his tenor saxophone playing in groups with fellow sax player Ronnie Scott and with trumpeter Jimmy Deuchar. 1967: For Members Only: '67 Live – Tubby Hayes Quartet. Volume 01' (Savage Solweig SS-001CD). 1968: The Syndicate: Live At The Hopbine 1968, Vol. 1. 1969: Live 1969 – Tubby Hayes Quartet. 1969: 200% Proof (BBC broadcast) – The Tubby Hayes Orchestra [rel.
