The traditional Hungarian music which originates from Translyvlania is some of the finest music in existence. Okros Ensemble and Sandor "Neti" Fodor are recognized as among the best. The music itself has been preserved for over 100 years: collected by Bela Bartok, Zoltan Kodaly, and Zoltan Kallos more recently. It is unaltered village music played by one or two violins, a gardon, and sometimes a bass. The half-step note variations occasionaly played by the violins is the unique musical styling for which the region is known. Let it be known that I am no expert on gypsy or hungarian music, I'm not a "musicologist" or whatever, but I am simply amazed with this album. I have always wanted an authentic gypsy, hungarian, romanian style fiddling dance album and finally I've found it. I've recently discovered the Rounder records selection and have been very pleased with what I've found.

CD Hungarian Music from Transylvania: Sándor Fodor (Hungaroton, Hungary) On this compelling disc of both Hungarian and Romanian music from Kalotaszeg, Neti plays with some of the best táncház musicians from Budapest - who've become his disciples. The energy and bite is fantastic. One of the essential Transylvanian records. cd Transylvanian Portraits (Koch, US) A fine survey of Transylvanian music from one of Budapest's best groups, the Ökrös Ensemble, with vocals by Márta Sebestyén. Mainly Hungarian repertoire including violin and gardon music from Gyimes and Csángó songs. The fiddle-playing of Csaba Ökrös on the last track ("The shepherd losing his Sheep") is stunning. Hungary has made many contributions to the fields of folk, popular and classical music. Hungarian folk music is a prominent part of the national identity and continues to play a major part in Hungarian music. It is also strong in the Szabolcs-Szatmár area and in the southwest part of Transdanubia. The Busójárás carnival in Mohács is a major Hungarian folk music event, formerly featuring the long-established and well-regarded Bogyiszló orchestra.

Notes

The Ökrös Ensemble is the leading folk revival band in Hungary. Performing on traditional instruments, including violins, violas and acoustic bass, Ökrös sustains the village music legacy of Hungary and Transylvania. Born in 1922 Fodor Sándor, or "Neti" is widely considered the last great Gypsy violinists of the Kalotaszeg region of Transylvania, a master of traditional folk styles learned firsthand, and of the Gypsy string band tradition. With the stunning vocals of Ági Szalóki on three tracks, this is a definitive collection. As Gypsy music has become a world phenomenon, there is no better or more breathtaking combination than Ökrös and Neti.
