It's All Around You is the fifth studio album by American post-rock band Tortoise. It was released on Thrill Jockey in 2004.
It has all the finesse and detail of a Steely Dan album. honed, honed and then honed again yet it doesn't lose it's grit and determination yet, in my view, they were to accomplish something even greater. Written largely in the studio, It's All Around You was crafted over the course of a full year, and allowed Tortoise the use of John McEntire's Soma Electronic Music Studios (whose clients have included Wilco, Stereolab among others) in serving not just as a state-of-the-art recording facility, but as a compositional tool as well. It took months of continuous writing, recording, tinkering, mixing, and perfecting to bring It's All Around You to it's finalized state.
It's All Around You, too, settled into REM sleep at that point. Even the band's busy percussion on "Dot/Eyes", electronic glitch on "By Dawn", and, uh, more skittering percussion and glitch and vibraphone on "Unknown" and "Five Too Many" seemed as instinctual and unnoticeable as fluttering eyelids, letting the subconscious spend more valuable time in dreams or the decayed island city depicted inside of the digipak. Tortoise, too, lure you in with nifty production tricks and winding melodies at the start of the album, and build to closing climaxes, just as they've done in the past on "TNT", "Seneca", and "Speakeasy. It's the middling middles that have always bogged their albums.

Tortoise only release an album about once every three years, and their style is one of the most distinctive in rock music, so a record that fails to push them forward can hardly be termed a failure. And yet, It's All Around You is a disappointment since it's clear the quintet is in a holding pattern, making music derivative of old glory TNT and even its shabbier successor, Standards.

The album's back half falls prey to some of the group's ponderous tendencies, taking long, slow detours through watered-down mood rock. But missteps are exceptions on It's All Around You, which casts the members of Tortoise as musical tourists governed by wandering eyes rather than anxiously readied cameras. Recent Video from The . While the previous Standards album was Tortoise's attempt to be a bit angry, It's All Around You returns to the usual blend of influences to produce an album that's by turns blissful and edgy. Our old friend the vibraphone is featured throughout, sprinkling little bursts of melody over the usual cocktail of skittery rhythms, spidery guitars and hazy electronics. In a way the lush geographies of the cover are a clear statement of intent; here Tortoise pile up layers of shimmering melodies with a faint whiff of exotica. Guitarist Jeff Parker finally gets a chance to turn his amp up to 11 on the closing "Salt the Skies", though judging by his recent solo album he's still a bit underused in this outfit.
